smoke for smoke

I just started Fyodor Dostoyevsky's "The House of the Dead" last week, and I must say I'm impressed, nay astonied at his brilliance in writing (despite, I might add, the translation from Russian). The man's writing, to borrow a line from Zoolander, exudes beauty. His caracter developments are absurdly genius. This particular novel is about his 4 year imprisonment in a labour camp and he does character studies of several of the inmates. A dry read it would be coming from the pen of any less gifted author.
